Is Your Dog Stressed? 7 Signs You Might Be Missing
Teilen
We love our dogs, but they can't tell us when something is wrong. Stress in dogs is more common than most owners realize — and the signs are often easy to miss or misread as "bad behavior."
Here are 7 signs your dog might be stressed, and what you can do about it.
1. Excessive yawning Yawning isn't always tiredness. Dogs yawn when they feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed — especially in new environments or around strangers.
2. Tucked tail or flattened ears These are classic signs, but many owners only notice them in extreme situations. Even a slightly lowered tail can signal low-level stress.
3. Refusing food A dog that suddenly loses interest in food is telling you something. Stress directly affects appetite — just like in humans.
4. Destructive behavior Chewing furniture, scratching doors, tearing up toys — this is often boredom or anxiety, not a "naughty dog."
5. Excessive licking Repetitive licking — especially of paws — is a self-soothing behavior. If you notice it often, your dog may be anxious.
6. Avoiding eye contact A stressed dog will often look away or leave the room when you approach. It's their way of saying "I need space."
7. Shaking or panting without reason If your dog is shaking or panting and it's not hot or after exercise, stress is a likely cause.
What can you do? The most important thing is routine. Dogs feel safe when they know what to expect — regular walks, feeding times, and calm environments make a huge difference.
If the behavior persists, always consult your vet.
