Why Is My Dog Not Drinking Enough Water? (And How to Fix It)

Water is one of the most important parts of your dog's health — yet most owners never think about it until something goes wrong.

The truth is, many dogs are mildly dehydrated on a daily basis. Here's what you need to know.

How much water does a dog actually need? A general rule is about 50ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. So a 10kg dog needs roughly half a litre every day — more in summer or after exercise.

Why do some dogs drink so little?

1. The bowl is in the wrong place Dogs don't like drinking near their food bowl or near their toilet area. Try moving the water bowl to a different spot in the house.

2. The water isn't fresh Dogs are surprisingly picky. If the water has been sitting for hours, many dogs will simply ignore it. Change it at least twice a day.

3. They prefer moving water In nature, dogs instinctively trust running water more than still water. Many dogs drink significantly more from a water fountain than a regular bowl.

4. The bowl material matters Some dogs dislike plastic bowls — they can hold bacteria and smell. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls are a better option.

5. They're just not thirsty enough Dogs on wet food get a lot of moisture from their meals. If your dog eats dry kibble, they need more water — but may not always feel the urge to drink.

Simple ways to get your dog drinking more

  • Add a small splash of low-sodium chicken broth to the water
  • Place multiple water bowls around the house
  • Try a pet water fountain — many dogs find moving water more appealing
  • Reward your dog when they drink — positive reinforcement works

When to be concerned If your dog suddenly stops drinking completely or seems lethargic, contact your vet. Dehydration can become serious quickly.
